The term “manufactory” is derived from the Latin “manu factum” which means “made by hand”. This applies to all glasses in the Gernot Lindner Sterling Silver collection. In fact, just a few select manufacturers remain that produce spectacle frames in the manner as the manufacturer of this collection, MMR Eyewear GmbH in Thyrnau, Bavaria. Every hinge, every temple and component of our glasses is thoughtfully planned and designed for the Gernot Lindner collection. The MMR eyewear manufactory represents the greatest quality and craftmanship in both design and production resulting in high-grade eyeglasses.
Every pair of Gernot Lindner glasses is 100% handmade in the MMR eyewear factory in Thyrnau, Germany, using specially developed tools. To make this collection possible it took more than two years of development work, and 120 specific tools were invested. The glasses are the result of entrepreneurial experimentation and constructive development work and represent a unique concept worldwide. Nevertheless, we are still constantly striving to improve our processes and incorporate new technologies. This ultimately benefits the customer, who receives timeless, elegant glasses with optimum wearing comfort made of precious metal - not off the peg, but "Handmade in Germany".
In the past, manufacturing of spectacles was a craft and the spectacle makers, were revered by nobility, scholars and clergy. Then, spectacles were a special item reserved for the upper classes due to the low level of literacy. Knowledge of the history of spectacles was made possible thanks to Gernot Lindner's decades-long study of historical visual aids. This profound expertise is reflected in the Gernot Lindner Sterling Silver collection and is a tribute to those old masters, which is ultimately revived in the design of the Gernot Lindner collection in a modern interpretation
Every pair of Gernot Lindner glasses passes through dozens of hands in the course of a long production process. Each work stage is followed by a comprehensive quality control procedure where each individual frame is examined closely for any potential imperfection. Before arriving to an optical store, the glasses are checked, adjusted and aligned to the highest quality standards. Many years of experience in the manufacture of high-quality spectacle frames are evident in all these manual processes and we are particularly proud of our employees' expertise.
Although sterling silver gives our collection its name, we also use other materials for the Gernot Lindner collection. For example, Italian acetate material is used for selected models. This guarantees the necessary dimensional stability and color fastness for our frames. The starting point is acetate, a material that consists largely of the cellulose of the cotton plant, from which acetate sheets are produced in northern Italy by specialized companies in a lengthy process. The molds are first milled from these sheets in a complex process and each individual piece of eyewear is polished by hand. This is the only way to guarantee the remarkably soft edges that are characteristic of the Gernot Linder collection.
